Arthur Treacher's Fish & Chips is a fast-food seafood restaurant chain. At its peak in popularity during the late 1970s, it had around 800 restaurant locations.
This fast-food franchise began in 1969 in Columbus, Ohio. The franchise borrows the name of an English character actor best known for his part as Jeeves. Arthur Treacher regarded as the perfect butler, starred in several Shirley Temple movies. He lent his name to the franchise and served as a spokesman for the restaurant chain in its early years, underscoring the British character of its food. In a 1975 interview, New England franchise vice president M. John Elliott claimed the fish recipe to be the actor's own, brought over from the United Kingdom.
The slow downfall of this really great fish and chips restaurant began at about the same time of its peak when they switched their Icelandic cod with a less expensive and oilier and of inferior quality pollock during the period of the cod wars between the United Kingdom and Iceland in the 1970s which had caused cod prices to double.
From here on it was a matter of Arthur Treacher's being bought and sold over and over and restaurant closings.
As of today, there is only one standalone Arthur Treacher's location left, which is in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. The location is owned by Ben Vittoria who has stated that has no plans of closing this restaurant.
I live nearby so I and my family set out to have a fine fish and Chips dinner in the one and only last ever Arthur Treacher's.
Our dinner was great, the portions were plentiful. the interior was very clean and the staff was very nice and friendly. The only thing I did not like was that there were no free refills. The fountain drink dispenser in the dining area was out of service. All drinks had to be purchased from the front registers.
As of now this Arthur Treacher's is the last standing, but if you're able and willing you can open and start a new Arthur Treacher's Fish and Chips Restaurant of your own. For information on this visit the link below.

I loved this restaurant so much. I'm from Ohio too and there used to be three or four locations that were relatively close to me, but this one remaining restaurant is about a 2 hour drive one way for me. One of these days I should go, I really miss them.
