Lorne Michaels Pleads w/ The Beatles to Play SNL 4 $$$

Here's the transcript of Lorne Michaels' original on air offer to the Beatles to get back together on the show.

April 24, 1976

BEATLES OFFER

(OPEN ON: LORNE AT DESK. THERE IS ONLY ONE CAMERA USED THROUGHOUT)

LORNE:
Hi. I'm Lorne Michaels, the producer of "Saturday Night." Right now, we're being seen by approximately twenty-two million viewers, but please allow me, if I may, to address myself to just four very special people -- John, Paul, George and Ringo -- the Beatles. Lately, there have been a lot of rumors to the effect that the four of you might be getting back together. That would be great. In my book, the Beatles are the best thing that ever happened to music. It goes even deeper than that. You're not just a musical group, you're a part of us. We grew up with you. It's for this reason that I'm inviting you to come on our show. Now, we've heard and read a lot about personality and legal conflicts that might prevent you guys from reuniting. That's something which is none of my business. That's a personal problem. You guys will have to handle that. But it's also been said that no one as yet has come up with enough money to satisfy you. Well, If it's money you want, there's no problem here. The National Broadcasting Company has authorized me to offer you this check to be on our show.

(HOLDS UP CHECK) A certified check for $3,000. Here it is, right here. Dave -- can we get a close-up on this? Which camera? Oh, this one. (CAMERA MOVES IN TO SHOW CHECK) Here it is, a check made out to you, the Beatles, for $3,000. All you have to do is sing three Beatle songs.

(SINGS)

She loves you - yeah, yeah, yeah ...

That's $1,000 right there. You know the words. It'll be easy. Like I said, this is made out to the Beatles -- you divide it up any way you want. If you want to give Ringo less, it's up to you. I'd rather not get involved. I'm sincere about this. If it helps you to reach a decision to reunite, it's well worth the investment. You have agents. You know where I can be reached.

Just think about it, okay? (HOLDS UP CHECK AGAIN)

Thank you.

***************************************************************************
Lorne Micheals made a second offer to the Fabs:

This was aired on May 22, 1976. The host was Buck Henry, and Musical guest was Gordon Lightfoot.

LORNE:

Hi, I'm Lorne Micheals, producer of Saturday Night. A short while ago I went on the air and addressed myself to John, Paul, George, and Ringo--the Beatles. At that time I invited them to come on our show, and told them that I was authorized by NBC to pay them in the sum of three thousand dollars for just three songs. Well, about a month has gone by. We've heard from the Monkees, Freddy and the Dreamers, Peter and Gordon, Herman's Hermits, the Cowsills, and Lulu; but still no word from the Beatles. I'm not discouraged and neither is NBC. Because of the recent acclaim we've received, I have the weight to go to the network and convince them that it is worth it for them to sweeten the pot. John, Paul, George, and Ringo--NBC is now prepared to up the original offer from three thousand, to three thousand, two hundred. Can we get a close-up of the check? Which camera is it? As you can see, it's a check made out to you, The Beatles.

Off the record, this increase comes to an extra fifty dollars for each of you. That's if you split it equally--I'm still not sure what your situation with Ringo is. Also, NBC has decided that they will take care of your hotel accommodations.

Don Pardo, tell the Beatles what they can expect when they come to get that check for three thousand, two hundred dollars.

DON PARDO:

It'll be my pleasure, Lorne. First of all, the lads from Liverpool will be picked up by a radio-dispatched Checker cab that will whisk them to the Cross Town Motor Inn, located in the heart of New York's fashionable garment district. Once there, they will check in in the
recently renovated lobby; and then it's off to their rooms via round-the-clock elevator service. They'll be treated like royalty as pitchers of ice water are hand-delivered to their rooms, and they can drink that water from glasses sanitized for their convenience. Oops--Ringo spilled
a little something on his jacket? No problem--not with prompt forty-eight-hour dry cleaning service! "In by Tuesday, out by Thursday." And let's just put a shine on those shoes, too, with a free shoe shine cloth. And, Lorne, since the Beatles will be staying in separate rooms, the four Mop Tops can speak to each other as much as they want because there is no charge for room-to-room calls. And, after a hard day's night, the Beatles can sleep as late as they like with a leisurely checkout time of 10 A.M. That's the Cross Town Motor Inn, a hotel tradition, hosting New York's visitors since 1971. Yeah, yeah, yeah! Back to you Lorne!

LORNE:

Thank you, Don Pardo. John, Paul, George, and Ringo, that's where we stand right now. Thirty-two hundred dollars, and free hotel accommodations. Now, it's your move. I've always respected you, and you were always my favorite group, and I always liked Yoko, even at the
beginning when everyone was having problems with her. I would like to see you do our show, and so would the American people. You know where i can be reached. I'm waiting to hear from you.

The Black Panther - Review - Download or Stream 4 FREE

This Black Panther is an exploitation film of another color. There's no super-hero in this tale. In fact, the film is primarily focused on the kidnapping of Lesley Whittle, an heiress. The story includes some of Donald Neilson's crimes that lead up to the kidnapping of Lesley Whittle, but for the most part just glosses over these as insignificant passing moments.

The Black Panther was the name given to Donald Neilson, because of his dark clothing disguises and his elusiveness while committing his various crimes.

Many thought the film came too soon after the Lesley Whittle kidnapping and murder. It was thought it to be in bad taste. Consequently, it was slammed by many celebrities and it was eventually banned.

Strange how people are though, many years later the film was remastered and included in the British Film Institute Archives and Hall of Fame. The film now boasts more positive reviews and is seen as an important British crime film.

The overall that I offer you here is that it's very much a British film and probably won't appeal to many others outside of the British cinema goers. The whole film is rather dark in its scenes and the dialog between character's is so dull, it leaves you nothing to remember.

Great movies always have something extra that makes them memorable, great lines in the characters dialog, lighting, the score, great direction, great editing, great acting, or possibly a cameo appearance. This film, The Black Panther has nothing, and I am sure that the creators of this, were looking to cash in on the controversial content.

*There are some minor inaccuracies in how some incidents really occurred and in the overall continuity. It's a film only the Brits could enjoy, for everyone else I suspect it'll be a waste of time to watch, if you can sit through this whole film, then you can take anything. Thumbs down!

Cast:
  • Donald Sumpter – Donald Neilson
  • Debbie Farrington – Lesley Whittle
  • Marjorie Yates – Neilson's Wife
  • Sylvia O'Donnell – Neilson's Daughter
  • Andrew Burt – Lesley's Brother
  • Alison Key – Lesley's Sister-In-Law
  • Ruth Dunning – Lesley's Mother
  • David Swift – Detective Chief Superintendent

Gone In 60 Seconds

Gone In 60 Seconds

Don't forget to lock your doors, because if you do, your car could be gone in 60 seconds.

This is a story of professional car thieves who are contracted to steal 48 cars in a matter of a couple of days. The car thieves work both sides of the action because they're in the insurance racket and know everything, not to mention this is a family business. The film is pure 70's shtick. Hang on to your seats, because the best part of this flick is that all the car chasing and car crashes are for real. There's a 40 minute car chase full of crazy action. Look out for Eleanor, she's the one that's real trouble.

So, forget about Nicolas Cage and Angelina Jolie and the lame remake. The real deal action flick Gone In 60 Seconds is from 1974 and stars “Toby” H. B. Halicki.

This is one of those rare gems and genuinely hard to come by films, because it was a low budget independently made film. It was made with a budget of $150,000 and has made $40 million.

Tom Petty - Highway Companion

Highway Companion is the third solo effort by Tom Petty, it was released on July 25th 2006, and peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 album chart.

The songs are better on this record than several other of his Heartbreakers records. The strength of this album is just that, all of the songs are really solid and the musical performances are better than you might think.

The only musical weakness found here isn't worth noting and probably wouldn't even be noticeable to most, but the drum parts could have been better, in some instances they sound a little bit stiff and mechanical. The rest of the musical arrangements are all well thought out and played perfectly. Tom plays everything here and gets a little help from his friends Mike Campbell who plays brilliantly simple leads to compliment all that is Petty and also some help from Jeff Lynne on everything else.

This really is a top-notch album, and because there weren't any really big hit singles, means you won't get tired of playing this album.

You can stream the whole album from YouTube by saving the play-list.

Best tracks are..."Saving Grace" - "Flirting with Time" - "Jack"
"Turn This Car Around" - "Big Weekend" - "Night Driver" - "This Old Town"

The album was recorded during 2005-2006 at Bungalow Palace and Shoreline Recorders, Los Angeles.

The fact that this is an older album shouldn't put you off, give this one a try, and I'm sure that you'll like it.

Rock On!

Stairway To Heaven aka A Matter of Life and Death - Movie Review

Stairway to Heaven / A Matter of Life and Death (1946) is a romantic fantasy film created by the British writing-directing-producing team of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, and set in England during the Second World War. The film stars David Niven, Roger Livesey, Raymond Massey, Kim Hunter and Marius Goring.

British flyer Peter Carter's plane is damaged while returning to England from a bombing run in May 1945 and his parachute is ripped to shreds. He has his crew bail out safely, but figures its curtains for himself. He gets on the radio, and talks to June, a young American woman working for the USAAF, and they are quite moved by each other's voices. Then he jumps, preferring this to burning up with his plane. He wakes up in the surf. It was his time to die, but there was a mix up in heaven. They couldn't find him in all that damn fog. By the time his Conductor 71 catches up with him more than 20 hours later, Peter and June have met and fallen in love. However, Peter now suffers hallucinations of death trying to take him away and June realizes Peter has suffered brain damage, he needs medical help, an operation, and during this operation Heaven agrees to a trial to decide his fate.

Since Peter has survived through no fault of his own, he figures that heaven should give him a second chance.

Will he get another chance to live and love?

This is a Color and BW film. This same film was titled A Matter of Life and Death for British release and titled Stairway to Heaven for US release.

The use of BW and Color is gimmicky even for its day, and depicting the Heavenly hereafter in BW rather than color was probably not the wisest choice. Regardless, this is a fantasy film worth watching, because if for no other reason David Niven is just a cool cat in any flick.

  • David Niven as Squadron Leader Peter David Carter
  • Kim Hunter as June
  • Roger Livesey as Dr. Frank Reeves
  • Kathleen Byron as an Angel
  • Richard Attenborough as an English Pilot
  • Bonar Colleano as an American Pilot
  • Joan Maude as Chief Recorder
  • Marius Goring as Conductor 71
  • Robert Coote as Flying Officer Bob Trubshawe
  • Robert Atkins as the Vicar
  • Bob Roberts as Dr. Gaertler
  • Edwin Max as Dr. Mc Ewan
  • Betty Potter as Mrs. Tucker, Reeves' housekeeper
  • Raymond Massey as Abraham Farlan
  • Abraham Sofaer as The Judge

The film was released in late 1946 and did well for the next few months at the box office.

The Top 20 Best Selling eBooks of 2017

Looking back on the year that was 2017 and wondering what the best of the best was, here's a list of the best selling ebooks of the year by actual sales through the world's biggest eBook seller.

If you were to do a search, you'd discover that everyone has a best selling list, and if you've seen a few you have undoubtedly noticed that they are not all the same. One of the most respected and highly referenced is the NY Times best sellers list, and then there is the LA Times, Wall Street Journal and then the online Book Sellers Barnes & Noble, and of course Amazon. Dunkirk WWII Drama 1958

Before you head out to the theaters this weekend, and see the 2017 Dunkirk English War thriller written, co-produced and directed by Christopher Nolan, that features Fionn Whitehead, Tom Glynn-Carney, Jack Lowden, and Harry Styles, treat yourself to a real-deal, made the way they're supposed to be classic, Dunkirk from 1958.

This film's story is meshed together from two novels. This Dunkirk from 1958 is a British war film directed by Leslie Norman. It stars John Mills, Richard Attenborough, along with Bernard Lee.

This Classic WWII Drama tells us the story of Operation Dynamo, an operation that lasted nine days. From the beaches of Dunkirk, many British and French troops were successfully evacuated in May and June of 1940.

At Dunkirk the Allies are surrounded and they fear being totally annihilated from the Nazi's. This World War II story is told primarily from the two points of views from the novels, this script is based on, a newspaper reporter and a soldier.

After being surrounded and trapped Allies began ferrying soldiers off of the beaches to safety. Eventually, soldiers were being picked up by any and every type of boat or ship that could get there, including civilian vessels as well. This takes place all while soldiers on the beaches are subjected to regular aerial bombing and strafing.

On May 23rd - 24th the German advance had come to a surprising halt, it was to be only temporary and then resume again. It ended up taking longer than anticipated, somewhere around 48 hours had passed in fact. They had simply outrun their supply columns, and had orders to wait for reinforcement before resuming full attack. This led to the eventual success of Operation Dynamo and how the Allies survived what many thought would be a total defeat.

In the aftermath some 330,000 troops were saved. The Germans on the other hand had scored a major victory and recovered all of the abandoned Allied supplies, some of which were 880 field guns, 310 large caliber guns, about 500 anti-aircraft guns, along with 850 anti-tank guns, 11,000 machine guns, approximately 700 tanks, 20,000 motorcycles, and 45,000 motor cars and lorries.

The German Army had won an important battle in France, but the dysfunction at the heart of the German high command could be seen here, it would ultimately lead to their own defeat and downfall.

The story here begins with some disparaging of a perceived 'phony war' and a writer's amazement at his countryman's complacency, their unwillingness to acknowledge the imminent danger ahead.

The story's viewpoint is observed through the eyes of Charles Foreman and that of Cpl. 'Tubby' Binns. Tubby is our reluctant leader along with a small group who have been disconnected from their larger unit and left behind. It is for them now, to find their way forward. Their trek eventually leads them to the beaches of Dunkirk, where Tubby eventually meets up with Foreman. These character's only briefly connect, as Foreman laments the why of what's going on. Finally, one of the reluctant participants, Holden, eventually gets to be of help, after civilian watercraft was conscripted. This led to civilian volunteers to aid in the evacuation. It's a very British film in language and dialect that is interesting to observe.

The shortcomings of the film would be that the film poorly illustrates the 48 hour period of the German halt. In the film, we have, it's barely noticeable, and after being noticed, air bombings ensued. The film also didn't do as well as they could have in illustrating visually the civilian effort. All of the boats that were in use made up an impressive impromptu armada that we never fully see. The sense of timing is lost here, you're just left to wonder about them instead.

Nevertheless, this period piece is well worth seeing. In the darkest of hours there will always be some optimists among pessimism. The contrasts of the two main characters are what make the blending of the two stories told here so interesting. In what became known as The Miracle of Dunkirk, the film shows us how everyone pulled together in the effort to save their boys.

The film from 1958 is as Director Leslie Norman states: “I was the council school boy who became a major in the war, and that had a lot to do with the way I felt about Dunkirk. I didn't think that Dunkirk was a defeat; I always thought it was a very gallant effort but not a victory.”
